Dental crowns and bridges

Are common, long-lasting ways to restore your smile and chewing function.

What is a dental crown?

– A crown is a custom “cap” that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and appearance.

– It’s often recommended for large cavities, cracked or worn teeth, after a root canal, to improve cosmetics, or to top a dental implant.

– Materials include porcelain/ceramic (tooth-colored), zirconia, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or gold—your dentist will help choose what fits your needs and bite.

How is a crown placed?

– Exam and X-rays to plan treatment.

– Tooth is reshaped under local anesthesia.

– A digital scan or impression is taken; a temporary crown is placed.

– The custom crown is made, then bonded at a follow-up visit (some offices offer same-day crowns).

What is a dental bridge?

– A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. It uses crowns on neighboring teeth (abutments) to hold a replacement tooth (pontic) in the gap.

– Benefits: restores chewing and speech, keeps teeth from shifting, and maintains your bite and facial support.

– Types include traditional bridges, cantilever bridges (supported on one side), Maryland (bonded “wings”), and implant-supported bridges.

Care and longevity

– Brush twice daily and floss daily; use a floss threader or interdental brush under a bridge.

– Avoid chewing ice or very sticky/hard foods; wear a nightguard if you grind.

– With good care, crowns often last 10–15+ years; bridges commonly last 7–10+ years or more.

Common questions

– Will it hurt? Treatment is done with local anesthesia; mild soreness or temporary sensitivity is normal and usually short-lived.

– Alternatives? Implants, removable partial dentures, inlays/onlays, or veneers—your dentist can explain what’s best for your case.

– Cost and insurance? Fees vary by material and complexity; many plans cover part of the cost when medically necessary.
